Grower's Sowing & Germination Protocol

Optimized for Capsicum chinense

Germination Soil Temp 82°F – 86°F (28°C – 30°C) Requires seedling heat mat with thermostat
Expected Sprout Time 10 – 21 Days Superhots take longer than grocery peppers
Seeding Depth 1/4 Inch (6mm) Lightly covered in fine, pre-moistened seed mix
Maturity Timeline ~115 Days From transplanting outdoors to ripe pod harvest

4 Golden Rules for High Germination:

  • Consistent Bottom Heat: Pepper seeds (especially superhots) will stall or rot in cold soil below 72°F. Maintain warmth 24/7 until emergence.
  • Damp, Not Waterlogged: Medium should feel like a wrung-out sponge. Excessive water depletes oxygen and causes damping off.
  • Dome Removal: As soon as 50% of hooks emerge, vent or remove the humidity dome and place seedlings under intense grow lights (14-16 hrs/day).
  • Gentle Air Circulation: Run an oscillating fan on low to strengthen seedling stems and discourage fungal gnats or mold.
